Example of Gr. 10 Notes

Examples:
1. The side length of a square is 12 mm . Calculate the
1.1 perimeter of the square.
1.2 area of the square.

1.1 Perimeter = 4 X 1 side           perimeter = sum of all four sides ( but they are all equal)
                     = 4 X 12 mm
                     = 48 mm
1.2 Area = side²
            = 12² mm²
            = 144 mm²

2. The area of a square is 256 mm² . Calculate the
2.1 length of one side.
2.2 perimeter of the square.

2.1        Area =  ( 1 side )²              OR                 A = s²
      256 cm² = ( 1 side )²                        256 cm²   = s²
         14 cm = 1 side                                   14 cm = s

2.2 p = 4 X s           . . . perimeter = 4 X 1 side ( above )
       = 4 X 14 cm
       = 56 cm

Exercise 3.4
1. The side length of a square is 13 cm. Calculate the
1.1 perimeter of the square.
1.2 area of the square.

2. The sitting room in Mr. Mekhoe’s house is in the form of a square. The area of this room
is 25 m² . Calculate the
2.1 length of one wall of the room.
2.2 perimeter of the room.

3. The area of a square field is 40 000 m² . The farmer wants to fence in the field by using
5 strands of wire. Calculate the length of the wire, in m, that he needs.
